Waterproof of building means building unaffected by water, or buildings are covered with a material that resists or does not allow water passage. Material should be used in wet conditions or environment or under water. Waterproofing means making an object water-resistant/waterproof.
Waterproofing of building is the duo of materials and systems that prevent water intrusion into building or structural elements of the buildings or its finished spaces.
Waterproofing has 3 steps to ensure a barrier for water into the building :
1. Knowing sources of water which can enter into building structure
2. design Preventive methods
3. Finalizing the design
CAUSES OF LEAKAGE OF WATER
For water leakage into building, any of 3 condition may be the cause
- Water in any of its forms must be present.
- Water could be moved in by any force, including wind, gravity etc
- There must be a breach i.e. hole, any opening or brak in the envelope to facilitate the entry of water.
Water is moved into the interior of a structure by various forces that include:
Natural gravity
Surface tension
Wind/Air currents
Capillary action
Hydrostatic pressure
